happy birthday to me

I celebrated my 34th birthday yesterday. I felt completely spoiled by my friends, Zach and the children! It was an awesome birthday! My festivities began with dessert with one of my bestest friends followed by the movie, Safe Haven. Total chick flick but that's why I go to the movies with friends.
Called something like mile high mountain pie..
blowing out my 1 candle...

Zach really spoiled me! I woke up the morning of my birthday to the house being decorated and presents sitting on the table.

Each of the kids made individual cards. Cara's was so cute with little flip tabs and notes written on each. One tab said, " I wish people don't die. I don't want you to."
I ve been wanting a kettle bell to workout with. I guess when in doubt with which weight to get, just buy them all. I also received from Zach ear muffs for the shooting range. I feel much better now knowing someones smelly, sweaty ears weren't inside the muffs I just stuck on my head. I can't wait to wear them at the range...maybe next birthday I'll get my own piece of artillery. Pink of course. Not because I love pink, but a pink gun would Be AWESOME! and it would match my muffs.

For my cake, Zach brought home a layered chocolate cake. It had cheesecake layers and mouse with white and dark chocolate. VERY delicious!
and of course a variety of ice cream. I prefer fruity ice creams with orange creamsicle being #1.
It was a wonderful day!

a small request

Cara has her own blog. She talks about some pretty neat things, mostly cupcakes and other desserts she makes. Cara wants to open her own bakery when she grows up. She is very talented in her cupcake baking.

So here is her blog: http://cakesforcara.blogspot.com/

She asked me tonight if anyone reads her blog and I sadly said "no". If you could just follow her and leave a comment once on awhile I know she would LOVE it.

Thanks!

our hospital story

Matthew tested positive RSV a couple of weeks ago and was admitted to AI Dupont Children's Hospital. But he's all better now. The end.

Just kidding....
This is Matthew and I in the ER, he looks pretty normal so I was a bit shocked when the ER pediatrician said they were admitting him for a night or two.

RSV is a lung infection that affects the bottom portion of the lungs (unlike pneumonia which affects the top), usually affecting children under 2. If over 2 is comes out as cold/flu symptoms. Matthew had no cough. No running nose. He developed a fever the Saturday before which broke with medicine then returned again. Because there weren't additional symptoms I did not worry about him and was letting his body heal itself. Wednesday morning  he woke up with heavy short breathing so I took him to the Urgent Care Center. When the doctor there checked his blood oxygen level, they told me it was too low and I need to go to the ER. A healthy child should have 100% oxygen levels in the blood, Matthew had 88% at the UCC and 87% at the ER. Still a little unsure of what this all meant, I was informed later that the brain is being deprived of oxygen..well, duh! Yep, I am a new Mom here. Even with oxygen being supplied Matthew slept at only 91-93% so we had to be admitted. Anything under 90% was..well dangerous.

Matthew is his metal cage crib. Wheres does one buy this? And how obvious would it be if I rolled one out of the front door of the hospital? Just wondering...

RSV is a 7-10 day virus with the worst part being in the middle of the strain. Highly contagious but only 3-4 days before symptoms begin (sorry anyone who was around us during that time).

He got worse the longer we were there so I am glad the pediatrician saw fit to keep him. Oh, and did I mention we were in ISOLATION? Basically, we had stricter rules regarding visitors and anyone and everyone coming in had to wear a mask and hospital gown and gloves.

Though he is sitting and looking not so sick, he was very sick and laid in our arms or in the crib all day and night. So keeping him happy and contained wasn't a problem. He didn't eat for 4 days and would only drink fluids from a WAWA cup and straw but he was drinking. We didn't care what or how he got liquids we just wanted him to get them because the nurses weighed his diapers to make sure he wasn't dehydrated. They would wake him up in the middle of the night to change his diaper, which just made him mad.
Don't let the cute smile fool you. He just ripped his oxygen out and the machines were all beeping. He is a stinker! He hated the tubing and monitors hooked to him. It was all we could do to keep them on and in. He objected every time he had his temperature taken or a nurse came near him with that darn stethoscope. Matthew needed Albuterol treatments with a Nebulizer. This was the worst thing ever! to Matthew of course, to me it looked painless and maybe quite invigorating, like a mini facial.

We went to the ER Wednesday morning, he was admitted in the afternoon, and the above picture is Thursday evening. He seemed to be feeling better so we gave him a ball to throw and a few toys.. He still needed to sleep without oxygen before he could be sent home. He had a constant high fever too.

And he is Friday morning. Tube, wire, and cage free. It was the first time he actually stood to walk since Wednesday morning and though he didn't eat much, he was nibbling on a graham cracker. We were waiting for the discharge papers. We got home around 10:30 Friday morning. Matthew was still sick for 3 more days. We didn't need to be in the hospital because he was able to breath without the oxygen but he had a fever until Sunday morning. He slept most of Friday and Saturday. But Sunday afternoon he was back to himself, or at least most himself.

It was a difficult time of course. We never had a child admitted to a hospital and though I had the up most confidence in AI and the staff there, it was very difficult to see my precious little boy sick. I knew he would get better but it made me thankful for the health my children have. My deepest thoughts go out to those parents that deal with sick children on a continuous basis.

I am so thankful for friends and family that came to our rescue. My mother in law who dropped her plans for 2 nights to be at the house with the other kids, She cooked them dinner, cleaned, took them to their activities and wash, dried, and folded at least 20 loads of laundry. Our friends and family were in constant concern and I don't think an hour went by that I didn't hear from someone. I had friends offering to come sit with me so I wouldn't be alone, another offered to take my kids for the evenings, and others offered dinner. I am so grateful for them!

I am thankful for Christina who is so sweet and thoughtful. She left this under my van (in the parking lot) after I told her I needed something deep fried and covered in chocolate...a 1/2 dozen of chocolate covered donuts and hot chocolate with this note. (I just wonder what the other people  were thinking as she crawled under my van with a pile of food?) AND brought me a salad from Salad Works because, try as they may, the cafeteria food was just gross.

Cafeteria instant potatoes, green beans (which were the best part) and some type of meatloaf. This was Matthews dinner but since he wasn't even eating I would try and order something I would eat. I couldn't eat it. It was gross.

Matthew is 100% back to normal. We are all excited!

Happy Valentines Day!

It is truly the Day Of Love around here. This year I was super excited for Valentines Day! I planned a lovely breakfast for the family complete with pink pancakes, strawberries, strawberry milk, donuts, and heart shaped bacon. I had it waiting for them when they got up in the morning. I purchased a small gift and left a valentine card for each of them.

Zach is so good at getting each of us a special lil' something on the holidays. He likes to give each of the kids something from him only. I think this is adorable. Here he is assembling his boxes of candy for everyone.

Cara wasn't having an official Valentines party at school but she wanted to make her class cupcakes. She baked red velvet with cream cheese icing, sprinkles, and chocolate hearts. They came out amazing. She is so talented.

I wanted to pack the kids a lunch that reminded them of Valentines today and how much I love them!I stuck with my pink/red theme. In their lunch box they will find: strawberries, pepperoni, Uncrustables (strawberry of course),  strawberry applesauce, pink wafer cookies and yogurt covered pretzels, Valentine fruit snacks and a love letter. I was so happy putting them together that I am sure I had a big silly smile on my face.

Since I have slaved over the stove already I decided to just order pizza for dinner. I have a few Valentine games planned but I didn't mention it to anyone in case I am too tired and forgo game night...maybe a corny (haven't used that word in 20 years) love movie...maybe just bed time...ANYWAY, I wanted to show my family how much I do LOVE them so I hope I accomplished that.

I also need to say (because obviously showing would be inappropriate) how much of an AMAZING husband I have. He is really the best! He is so supportive and encouraging and thoughtful. I am grateful for him!
 My Kitchen Helpers

This is what we had for dinner. Costco sells their pizzas for 6$ which is basically the best deal in the store. The pepperonis are huge so I took them all off and used my heart cookie cutter to cut the shapes.

Happy Valentines Day.

don't mess with me

Zach and I had a date night. He first swooned me over Chinese Food at PF Changs. Then took me shooting at TargetMaster, an indoor shooting range. I was really terrified. I was so terrified the bullet would backfire and kill me OR what if  someone in an adjoining lane decided to go crazy and shoot everyone in there! There isn't any protection from those people. Zach loaded a gun for me, showed me a few tricks of the trade, and I was standing there with a gun in my hand, shaking a little. It wasn't that difficult and after a few rounds I got the hang of it. Zach forgot to show me how to hold the gun and it cut my thumb. I was fine. That is what I told the lady, but she said I wasn't, guns are full of lead and I used my smarts to figure out I could get lead poisoning. I panicked...a little.

So would I go again? Yes. Was it fun? No. I want to "not miss". Aim. Shoot. Hit. Can't be hitting an ear when I aimed for the eye, can I? It's more of a challenge now.

I do enjoy dating my husband so anything we do ends up fun.

and the award goes to...

The Pine Wood Derby was Friday night, January 25 . Sam came in 4th place, if there was ever an award for 4th place he would of got one. A big, round, sugar cookie necklace.  I'm all about some cute prizes but for all the time these boys put into their cars I would expect something a little more..unedible. Sam did win Best Paint Job but who wouldnt of guessed that since Zach owns the paint booth.

We got home past bedtime on Friday so it was a quick, get your pajamas on, brush your teeth, its bedtime, kind of night. About 15 minutes into the peace and quiet Olivia starts complaining about her ear. Or was it her eye...leg...lips..something. Anyway, she gets up so I can give her Tylenol. The night never ended. It was a terribly long dreadful night. Olivia screamed and cried and moaned about her ear hurting. My first thought, of course, was an ear infection all of a SUDDEN. Man, those things come quick right out of the blue. Zach and I sat with her on couch since she was so loud we didn't want her waking the other kids. She was hitting her ear, kicking the couch, rolling all over the place. Trust me I would of loved to lock her in the basement or garage her room. Seriously, how can one cry for 6 hours???? I figured eventually she would just cry herself to sleep.

The ER was completely out of the question since we have no health insurance so we would have to endure until the Urgent Care Center opened in the morning. I read everything I could about natural home remedies for ear infections but she just screamed louder when I tried practice my new found treatment. Garlic and olive oil. Hmm..not really trying to keep a vampire away but if it works....rice in a sock?

FINALLY at 4:30 am she fell asleep.

I took her to the Urgent Care Center as soon as she woke up. And guess what? NOTHING!!! There was really no reason for her to act the way she did for as long as she did. She totally won the drama award. No, it wasn't a big round sugar cookie.

blogging totally sucks!

Thats my fyi today. So many things to write about. Sams pine wood derby. Cara aand Sams concert. Matthews hospital vacation. Miscellaneous pictures of very cute kids. And my Master bedroom redo updates. One day I'll get around to it but for your viewing pleasure.

Aren't these two just the most handsome?!?!
